The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Port Harcourt Branch, has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as the University Administration’s failure to address outstanding salary and allowance issues affecting its members.
The decision was made at an emergency congress of the union held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, following the expiration of a deadline earlier issued to the university management.
According to a statement signed by the Branch Secretary, Tarila Amakoromo, the union is demanding the completion of payment of three months’ salaries owed lecturers for June, July and August 2026.
The union is also demanding the payment of outstanding responsibility allowances to lecturers, including members under CONMESS and CONHESS in the School of Health Sciences.
ASUU-Uniport further alleged that its members have been sidelined in the monthly payment of responsibility allowances to members of other unions for over two years.
The union said its emergency congress on September 11 gave the university management 48 working hours, ending at midnight on Tuesday, September 15, to address the issues or face an indefinite local strike backed by the union’s national body.
It said although the university administration met with the union on September 11 and promised to respond to the demands before the deadline, the issues remained unresolved.
ASUU-UNIPORT has therefore directed its members not to conduct lectures or examinations, invigilate examinations, participate in official assignments or attend statutory meetings for the duration of the strike.
The branch secretary stated that the strike action is backed by the national body of the union, and added that a Strike Monitoring Team had been constituted to monitor compliance across the university’s campuses and centres.
The branch concluded its declaration with the slogan, “United we bargain, divided we beg! Aluta Continua!”
Meanwhile as at the moment of filing this report, all efforts to get the reaction of Uniport management were unsuccessful.
