The Dan-Jumbo Chieftaincy House of Grand Bonny Kingdom is celebrating its Chief and Head, Se-Alabo Clinton Ibiwari Gibson Dan-Jumbo, Jene IV, as he marks another year of life, with emphasis on ancestry, traditional leadership, service and the preservation of heritage.
The birthday celebration comes as Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo continues his tenure as the fourth Chief and Head of the historic Dan-Jumbo Chieftaincy House, following his installation on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Dan-Jumbo Isile-Ogono, the homestead of the House in Bonny, Rivers State.
The installation marked the continuation of a traditional institution whose history dates back to the 19th century, with the progenitor of the House, Ada Jene, installed in 1875 and remaining its leader until his death in 1909.
The birthday tribute describes Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo’s journey as one that extends beyond personal achievement, placing emphasis on the responsibility attached to preserving the history, dignity and identity of the Dan-Jumbo lineage for present and future generations.
According to the tribute, becoming Jene IV means inheriting not only a traditional position but also “a trust”, alongside the memories, obligations and expectations associated with the ancestral institution.
It describes traditional leadership as a bridge between generations, connecting ancestral history with the living and linking the wisdom of elders with the aspirations of younger people.
The tribute also highlights Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo’s professional background as a legal practitioner, noting that it places him at the intersection of traditional responsibilities, contemporary law, community affairs and development.
Since his installation, Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo has been publicly involved in issues concerning ancestral land, traditional institutions and the interests of the Dan-Jumbo House.
In March 2024, shortly after his installation, he said there was a need for Bonny people to tell their own story and preserve the history of the Kingdom.
“If you don’t tell your own story, someone else will tell it for you,” Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo said during a courtesy visit to Kristina Reports on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
He also urged Kristina Reports to maintain professionalism and report issues according to the facts, saying, “Tell the story, accept it the way it is, that’s the truth.”
His public interventions have also included matters relating to ancestral land ownership and the interests of the wider Jumbo House.
In a 2024 letter concerning the Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal, Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo maintained that the Jumbo House, comprising the Jumbo Main House, Dan-Jumbo House and John Jumbo House, should be recognised in matters relating to the 1958 lease agreement and the land hosting the terminal.
In another intervention in 2026, he addressed the seizure of vehicles belonging to companies operating within the Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal, stating that such actions had not been authorised by the leadership of Jumbo House and directing that the vehicles be released.
Beyond land and community affairs, Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo has repeatedly used public messages to emphasise unity, peace, cultural preservation and collective responsibility.
In his Easter message in 2025, he described the season as a reminder that leadership should be rooted in service, sacrifice and the pursuit of peace and progress.
The birthday tribute therefore presents his current chapter as part of a much longer Dan-Jumbo story, urging him to preserve the values inherited from previous generations while preparing the institution for those yet unborn.
It states that the significance of his birthday should not be measured only by the number of years he has lived, but also by the responsibilities he has accepted and the legacy he is building.
The tribute further calls for wisdom, humility, courage, integrity and service, stressing that traditional leadership carries responsibilities that extend beyond ceremonial functions.
“Leadership is ultimately measured not by the grandeur of the office, but by the lives touched and the legacy left behind,” the tribute states.
It also reflects on the importance of ancestral memory to the identity of the people of Grand Bonny Kingdom, noting that preserving history, ancestral lands, traditions and stories remains essential to transmitting cultural identity to younger generations.
As Jene IV, Se-Alabo Dan-Jumbo is described as occupying one chapter in a continuing lineage, with future generations expected to assess what was inherited, what was preserved, what was improved and what was eventually handed down.
The birthday message consequently expresses prayers for long life, sound health, wisdom, peace and fulfilment, while also seeking blessings for his household, the Dan-Jumbo Chieftaincy House and Grand Bonny Kingdom.
