New Army Brigade to be Sited in Ahoada Will Tackle Insecurity — Fubara

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara says the establishment of a new Nigerian Army Brigade in Ahoada will help address security challenges and reduce tension in the area.

Governor Fubara stated this on Friday October 9, 2026 while receiving the Commander, 6 Division Garrison and Sector 3, Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation Delta Safe, Brigadier General Ismaila Sule, at Government House, Port Harcourt.

Fubara described the establishment of the new military formation as a strategic decision that would strengthen security in the Ahoada axis and promote peace and stability in the state. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for the initiative, noting that the new formation would help address agitation and other security challenges in the area.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army in protecting oil and gas facilities, pipelines and other critical national assets across Rivers State. He described the relationship between the state government and the military as mutually beneficial, stressing that supporting security agencies was a responsibility necessary for social and economic development.

Governor Fubara also assured the military that his administration would not ask it to act outside its professional and statutory responsibilities or oppress any citizen, emphasising that his government’s interest remained peace, progress and development.

Earlier, Brigadier General Ismaila Sule said the establishment of the new brigade in Ahoada, alongside its affiliate battalions, was part of the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions, following a directive by President Tinubu. He expressed confidence that the new military formation would help tackle security challenges in the area and strengthen the Army’s capacity to maintain peace across the state.

The commander thanked the Rivers State Government for its consistent support to the military and pledged to strengthen cooperation with relevant stakeholders during his tour of duty. Brigadier General Sule also disclosed plans to visit the 23 local government areas of Rivers State and nearby military formations as part of efforts to assess security situations and enhance operational effectiveness.
