It was a weekend of high-octane drama for Nigerian forward prospects, as 20-year-old George Ilenikhena stole the spotlight in Saudi Arabia and Tolu Arokodare maintained his fine personal streak for Dutch giants AFC Ajax in Europe.
Ilenikhena Steals the Show Against Al Nassr
In the Saudi Pro League, all eyes were on five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, but it was young Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena who commanded the pitch as Al-Ittihad secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Al Nassr at the Alinma Bank Stadium.
The young forward wasted no time setting the tempo during the Round 5 showdown. Just four minutes into the match, Ilenikhena reacted sharply inside the penalty area to direct a clinical header into the net, giving the hosts an early lead.
Eighteen minutes later, he produced a stunning acrobatic finish to double Al-Ittihad’s advantage. Needing only three shot attempts to score his two goals, Ilenikhena’s ruthless efficiency earned him a match-high rating, putting Ronaldo’s side firmly on the back foot.
Al Nassr responded in the 36th minute when Ângelo Gabriel scored from a Ronaldo assist, but despite heavy second-half pressure and 16 shot attempts from the visitors, Al-Ittihad held firm.
Ilenikhena left the pitch to a standing ovation in the 66th minute, having already completed a performance that sent a bold statement to Super Eagles selectors.
The victory continues his remarkable run of form, having also found the back of the net against Al-Qadsiah and Al-Najma in recent outings.
Arokodare Scores Again Despite Ajax Defeat
Meanwhile, in the Dutch Eredivisie, 25-year-old Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive individual form for AFC Ajax, though his effort couldn’t prevent a 3-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Coming off a goal-scoring performance against Telstar, Arokodare kept his composure to restore parity for Ajax after Ricardo Pepi had given the visitors an early fifth-minute lead.
In the 23rd minute, Arokodare gathered the ball at the edge of the box, held off his marker, and capitalized on a loose rebound to slot home his fifth goal of the season.
The equaliser marked a fourth consecutive goal-scoring appearance for the Nigerian striker, bringing his tally to six goal contributions (five goals and one assist) over that sequence.
Despite Arokodare’s sharp work up front before being substituted at the hour mark, PSV reclaimed the lead on the stroke of halftime through Lutsharel Geertruida.
Esmir Bajraktarević then sealed the win for PSV with a stoppage-time strike, handing Ajax their first league defeat of the campaign.
