Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State Council, have unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Ifeanyi Nwanguma, affirming their trust in the council’s executive over what they described as an inclusive, transparent and accountable administration.
The endorsement was made during the Union’s Congress held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, New Owerri, where members commended the leadership for its commitment to accountability, transparency and members’ welfare.
The motion was moved by Destiny Akunesi, who said the confidence vote was a reflection of the executive’s performance and compliance with the accountability standards set by the national leadership of the Union.
Akunesi disclosed that the National Secretariat of the NUJ had directed all state councils to submit reports detailing their activities and financial records from 2022 to date for assessment.
According to him, information from the NUJ South East Zonal Office confirmed that the Imo State Council had successfully submitted its financial statements, which were reviewed and approved.
“The development demonstrated that the Nwanguma-led administration had passed the accountability test and deserved the confidence and commendation of members,” Akunesi said.
He maintained that the approval of the council’s financial records underscored the executive’s commitment to prudent management and openness in handling the Union’s affairs.
The motion received overwhelming support when Chris Ogbonna seconded it, urging journalists across the state to continue supporting the current leadership to sustain programmes aimed at strengthening the profession.
Ogbonna said continued cooperation from members would enable the executive to consolidate efforts toward protecting the integrity, ethics and professionalism of journalism in Imo State.
Also speaking during the congress, Fidel Onyeneke encouraged the council’s leadership to remain focused on repositioning the journalism profession while responding to the welfare and professional needs of members.
Onyeneke urged the executive not to relent in pursuing reforms capable of strengthening the Union and enhancing the credibility of journalism in the state.
Following deliberations, members unanimously adopted the vote of confidence in the presence of former council chairmen, including Eze Adiuku, Val Okechukwu, Fidel Onyeneke, Innocent Igwe, Chris Akaraonye and Francis Ebonugwo.
The congress was also attended by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State Council, Uche Chigamezu, alongside other stakeholders of the Union, who witnessed the unanimous endorsement of the council’s leadership.
The outcome of the congress is expected to further strengthen confidence in the current administration as it continues implementing programmes focused on accountability, professional development and the welfare of journalists in Imo State.
