The Rivers State Government has lifted the suspension placed on Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eliogbolo, after the school met all the safety requirements set by the Ministry of Education.

According to a press statement signed by the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, and published on the official social media pages of the State Ministry of Education on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the decision followed a thorough investigation and a fresh inspection, which confirmed that the school had upgraded its facilities and now complies with the required safety standards.

Wisdom Gate School closure following toddler death in Rivers State

As a result, the Ministry has granted Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, approval to immediately resume academic activities.

However, the government warned the school to ensure that no incident capable of endangering the lives of pupils occurs again.

The Ministry also stressed that the school’s management must continue to maintain high safety standards to prevent another tragic incident.

The school had been under suspension since April following the tragic death of two-year-old pupil, Winnie Akekue.

According to the family, a bookshelf allegedly fell on the little girl while she was sleeping inside her classroom, causing severe head injuries that later led to her death.

The incident sparked widespread public outrage, with the family accusing the school of delaying information and attempting to cover up what had happened.

Following the tragedy, the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, ordered the immediate closure of the school’s Campus 1 while the Ministry conducted an independent investigation.
