The Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, has formally commenced academic activities with the announcement of its maiden matriculation ceremony, which will see 1,004 pioneer students admitted into 28 departments across six faculties.

Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, January 26, 2026, FUET’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Mmom, declared that the university is set to hold its historic maiden matriculation on Tuesday February 3, 2026.

He described the development as “a defining milestone not only for the institution but also for Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region”.

According to him, the 1,004 students will be admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, and the Faculty of Management Technology.

He disclosed that although the university was not initially listed in the 2025/2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), it secured approval for candidates to transfer their admissions.

He disclosed that over 2,000 prospective students applied, but only about half were admitted in line with the institution’s carrying capacity.

The Vice Chancellor outlined a three-day programme of activities to mark the Founders’ Day and maiden matriculation ceremony, saying activities will commence on Sunday, February 1, 2026, with a Thanksgiving and Spiritual Dedication service.

On Monday, February 2, a Founders’ Day Roadshow will take off from the Saakpenwa Campus to Gbam Junction as part of public engagement and environmental stewardship activities.

These are to pave way for the main matriculation ceremony on Tuesday, February 3, at the FUET Auditorium.

Highlights of the event include the unveiling of the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Statue and the commissioning of the Kenule Saro-Wiwa Auditorium by the Special Guest of Honour, Eze Ogba, the Oba of Ogbaland.

The ceremony will also feature a Founders’ Day Lecture to be delivered by Emeritus Professor, Joseph A. Ajienka, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

In addition, the university will introduce a N5 billion Research and Development Endowment Fund aimed at supporting innovation, translational research, and sustainable development initiatives.

Professor Mmom explained that FUET was established following the signing of its enabling law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR on February 3, 2025 as part of efforts to advance environmental restoration, technological innovation, and sustainable development in Ogoniland and the Niger Delta.

He noted that the university operates two campuses at Koroma and Saakpenwa, with the Koroma community donating a large expanse of land to support future expansion, including demonstration farms and agricultural laboratories.

This maiden matriculation ceremony is expected to attract representatives of federal and state government agencies, traditional rulers, regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and academic institutions from across the country.
