Nigerian forwards Ademola Lookman and Chuba Akpom were both on target for their respective clubs in preseason fixtures, delivering encouraging performances ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Lookman stole the spotlight with a superb first-half brace as Atletico Madrid cruised to a commanding 4-1 victory over fellow La Liga side Getafe.

The Super Eagles attacker made an instant impact by opening the scoring inside five minutes, reacting quickest to convert a rebound from close range after Getafe failed to clear their lines.

The 28-year-old doubled Atletico’s advantage in the 35th minute, showing composure inside the box to finish off a flowing attacking move and cap an outstanding first-half display.

Getafe reduced the deficit shortly before the break through Alvaro Gutierrez, but Diego Simeone’s side remained firmly in control after the restart.

Goals from Arnau Ortiz and Obed Vargas completed an emphatic victory as Atletico continued their preparations for the new season.

Lookman’s impressive display will further strengthen his bid to become a key figure in Simeone’s attacking plans following his move from Atalanta.

The Nigerian forward has adapted quickly and appears ready to make a significant impact in Madrid.

Elsewhere, Chuba Akpom also continued his positive preseason form by scoring for Ipswich Town in their 2-1 defeat to Spanish outfit Osasuna.

Introduced at the beginning of the second half, Akpom wasted little time making his mark. Just eight minutes after coming on, the Nigerian striker found the equaliser in the 54th minute, finishing confidently to cancel out Miguel Auria’s early opener for the visitors.

The goal will see the Nigerian star look to earn more regular minutes following Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League.

The former Ajax forward initially joined the Tractor Boys on loan before completing a permanent switch after helping the club secure a return to England’s top flight.

Last season, he made valuable contributions largely from the bench, scoring twice in 29 Championship appearances.

Despite Akpom’s leveller, Ipswich were denied a positive result when Raúl Moro struck late in the game to hand Osasuna victory.

With the new season drawing closer, both Lookman and Akpom have given their managers plenty of reasons for optimism.

Their goals will boost confidence as they aim to carry their preseason form into competitive action for club and country.
