Argentina produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, July 7, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The defending champions looked destined for elimination after Egypt surged into a 2-0 lead through first-half and second-half strikes from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko.

Egypt’s disciplined defending and swift counterattacks kept Argentina under pressure, while Lionel Messi also squandered a first-half penalty that could have changed the complexion of the match.

With only 11 minutes of regulation time remaining, Argentina began an extraordinary fightback.

Cristian Romero sparked the revival in the 79th minute, heading home from a Messi free-kick to halve the deficit.

Four minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss by firing in the equaliser to restore hope for the South Americans.

As the match entered stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the stunning turnaround with a decisive header, sealing a 3-2 victory that sent Argentina into the last eight and preserved their bid to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup.

An emotional Messi reflected on the dramatic victory after the final whistle.

“I cried because of everything this means. We never stopped believing,” Messi said after helping inspire the comeback.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted the dramatic nature of the victory overwhelmed him.

“I was moved by what these players did.”

“They never gave up,” Scaloni said after the match.

The encounter was not without controversy.

Egypt had another goal ruled out following a Video Assistant Referee review, while late appeals for a penalty were waved away, prompting furious protests from the Egyptian bench after Fernández’s winning goal.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan described the defeat as painful and questioned the officiating.

“It was an unjust defeat,” Hassan said, adding that “the refereeing was unfair.”

Despite the heartbreaking exit, Egypt earned widespread praise for pushing the reigning champions to the brink of elimination in one of the tournament’s most memorable knockout fixtures.

The victory sends Argentina into a quarter-final meeting with Switzerland on Saturday, July 11, as the South Americans continue their quest for back-to-back World Cup titles.
