Newcastle United Women have completed the permanent signing of Nigeria-eligible midfielder Ashanti Akpan from Chelsea Women.

The 19-year-old arrives at St James’ Park after spending the first half of the season on loan at Southampton Women, marking the end of a remarkable 12-year journey at Chelsea.
Ashanti Akpan Joins Newcastle United on Permanent Deal
Akpan joined Chelsea at just seven years old, progressing through the club’s youth system before making her senior debut at 17 in an FA Cup match against Reading Women.
She later signed her first professional contract with the Blues, gaining a reputation as a talented and versatile midfielder.
“I’m so excited and happy to be joining here. I feel like the ambition of the club is heading in such a good direction and being here in this moment is very good for my career and I’m just excited to get started,” Akpan said after signing with Newcastle United.
Career Growth and Experience Across Women’s Football
During her loan spells, Akpan gained valuable Championship experience with Birmingham City Women last season and Southampton Women earlier this campaign, making 15 appearances across both clubs.
Her development has been closely watched, with her versatility and leadership on the field earning praise.
Leaving Chelsea was a significant decision for Akpan, who spent the majority of her life with the club.

She explained, “Yeah obviously being there from seven, it was obviously all I knew. It was my home for such a long time and I was such privileged to be in that position where I was. But in this moment I’m very excited with Newcastle and I feel like it is the right time to make this next step in my career.”
International Ambitions Remain High
Akpan has represented England at youth level up to the U-23s and captained the under-19s, demonstrating her potential on the international stage.
When asked about her future aspirations, she said, “Of course that’s the dream. That’s where I hope to be at and it’s been so good to be able to work my way through the age groups.”
Born in Poland to a Nigerian father and a Polish mother, Akpan remains eligible to play for England, Poland, or Super Falcons of Nigeria, keeping her options open as her career continues to develop.
