Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, will take the pitch without one of their defensive anchors at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The defender was noticeably absent from the final 25-player squad list announced by head coach Justine Madugu.

Plumptre Ruled Out of Nigeria’s 2026 WAFCON Campaign

The 27-year-old former Leicester City star confirmed that her omission is due to a persistent foot injury.

Plumptre shared that she is prioritising her long-term physical health, recognising that her body requires more time before she can safely return to high-intensity competitive football.

While deeply disappointed to miss out on Africa’s premier women’s football tournament, the defender remains optimistic about pulling on the green and white jersey again once she achieves full fitness.

An Emotional Rallying Cry for the Super Falcons

Rather than focusing on her personal setback, Plumptre took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to deliver a heartfelt message, urging fans to throw their support behind the team as they chase a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening,” Plumptre shared. “Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.

So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you. I am with you ladies. Naija no dey carry last.”

A Major Blow to the Defense

Plumptre, who made her tournament debut at Morocco 2022, has grown into a vital component of Nigeria’s backline.

Her absence leaves a significant void in the squad, especially given her experience helping the Super Falcons secure their 10th continental crown in a thrilling 3-2 final against Morocco.

As the tournament approaches, Plumptre has explicitly asked the passionate Nigerian fanbase to remain patient and maintain a positive, encouraging environment for the squad throughout their campaign.
