Senegal’s hopes of reaching the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreaking fashion after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in their Round of 32 clash on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Seattle Stadium in Seattle, Washington, United States.

The African side dominated much of the contest and deservedly went ahead in the 25th minute when Habib Diarra scored from close range after Ismaïla Sarr’s effort struck the post.

Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage six minutes into the second half, brilliantly controlling a long pass before powering his finish beyond Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to make it 2-0.

Belgium, however, mounted a dramatic late comeback as Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans headed home the equaliser in the 89th minute to force the match into extra time.

Just as the contest appeared destined for a penalty shootout, a Video Assistant Referee review ruled that Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans inside the penalty area.

Tielemans calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 125th minute to complete Belgium’s remarkable turnaround and secure a place in the Round of 16.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia’s decision to introduce Lukaku at half-time proved decisive as the substitutes transformed the game and kept Belgium’s World Cup campaign alive.

Reflecting on the victory, Tielemans credited Belgium’s substitutes for changing the course of the match.

“The players who came off the bench changed the game,” he said.

A disappointed Senegal coach, Pape Thiaw, believed his side deserved more after controlling large periods of the encounter.

“We were determined to write some beautiful pages in the history of our football in this World Cup, and we have to accept that we failed in this mission.”

“Given what we offered, we shouldn’t have lost this match,” Thiaw said after the game.

The defeat extended a painful trend for African teams at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Senegal becoming the fourth team from the continent to exit the competition in the Round of 32 despite producing an impressive performance.

Belgium advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts in the United States on Monday, July 6, 2026, in Seattle.
