BIRC Warns Against Job Scams, Sexual Harassment in Bonny

In its bid to assure transparency and integrity in its processes, the Bonny Integrated Recruitment Centre (BIRC) has warned members of the public against paying money or offering sexual favours to secure employment opportunities in Bonny, Rivers State.

Chairman of the BIRC, Adawari Julius Jumbo, in a public notice issued on Monday, October 26, 2026, declared that anyone involved in such practices risks arrest and prosecution.

He stressed that the centre would not tolerate corruption, job racketeering or sexual harassment in its recruitment processes.

Jumbo cautioned job seekers against individuals demanding money or sex in exchange for job slots, insisting that employment opportunities must not be used to exploit vulnerable applicants.

He further warned that both parties involved in the exchange of money for job opportunities could face arrest and prosecution, while urging anyone confronted with such demands to report immediately to the police.

The BIRC Chairman called on residents to reject corrupt practices and support efforts to ensure that recruitment processes in Bonny are transparent, fair and free from exploitation.

“Say NO to corruption. Let us build a clean and fair Bonny together,” the notice declared.

Over the years, the double menace of job racketeering and sexual exploitation has marred the integrity of the Centre with little or no effort by past administrations to checkmate or curb the ugly trend.

Thus, stakeholders view this move by the current administration as a step in the right direction, warning, however, that it should not only remain at the level of public notices.

They urged the Adawari Jumbo led BIRC to integrate measures to curb the menace and identify, track, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators, adding that mere public notices won’t scare perpetrators who have made such practices a means of livelihood.
