The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of daily toll collections imposed on petty traders operating without lock-up shops, describing the practice as illegal.

Mbah issued this directive on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 during a stakeholders’ meeting on the clarification and harmonization of revenue collection in markets across the State in Enugu.

Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, the State chief executive issued a stern warning that anyone found collecting such levies typically ranging from ₦100 to ₦200 whether on behalf of the government or privately, would face strict legal consequences.

“The daily toll revenue collection from traders without lockup shops comes to an end with immediate effect, and anyone found collecting the N100 or N200 toll revenue, either for the government or individual will face the full weight of the law”.

Mbah stated that the decision was part of efforts to protect vulnerable traders from exploitation and to restore order in market operations across the State.

According to him, the order does not affect traders in the lockup shops who pay 30,000 or 36,000 Naira annually, noting that his administration detests any action that escalates people’s sufferings.

To ensure full compliance with the directive, the governor announced the constitution of a task force chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The committee is mandated to enforce the ban and monitor activities in markets statewide.
