Chris Rock has credited longtime friend Adam Sandler with influencing his move from comedy into more dramatic filmmaking.
Rock discussed the transition during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where he presented Misty Green, a drama he wrote, directed and stars in.
The film follows a struggling actress attempting to rebuild her career in Hollywood and features Rosalind Eleazar in the lead role.
Rock said Sandler’s dramatic performances gave him a reference point as he developed his own approach to serious storytelling.
He specifically pointed to Sandler’s performances in Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems as examples of the dramatic work that impressed him.
Rock said, “I just take notes from the Sandman.”
He also acknowledged Sandler’s experience in dramatic roles, saying, “He’s so far ahead.”
Rock’s own transition is reflected in Misty Green, which moves away from the traditional comedy associated with much of his career.
Speaking about the decision to take on a drama, Rock said, “I shouldn’t have to do the same thing every time.”
He explained that he wanted audiences to see what his dramatic work could look like rather than repeatedly returning to the same creative territory.
The film centres on an actress dealing with professional setbacks, financial pressure and the difficulty of trying to regain a place in Hollywood.
Rock has described the project as his most dramatic film to date while continuing to combine filmmaking with elements of the entertainment industry he has observed throughout his career.
Misty Green had its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival and is scheduled to open in cinemas on Friday, October 9, 2026.
