Christian Nwachukwu grabs Champions League spotlight as Sabah Baku complete historic comeback

Sabah Baku FK have written one of the most remarkable chapters in modern European football, becoming the youngest club in history to reach the UEFA Champions League main draw.

When everything hung in the balance and the moment demanded a hero, 20-year-old Nigerian forward Christian Nwachukwu stepped up to turn the tide.

The Owls entered the play-off second leg in Baku trailing 2-1 on aggregate against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Disaster struck early when Igor Zlatanović capitalised on a Stas Pokatilov clearance error to put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute. Facing a daunting two-goal aggregate deficit, the Azerbaijani champions needed a spark.

Nwachukwu, making his first start in the qualifying series after joining from Sheffield United on August 1, 2026, provided exactly that.

Just before half-time, the quick-witted Nigerian forward pounced on a defensive mix-up, prodding home from close range to level the scoreline on the night and breathe new life into Bank Respublika Arena.

Putting in a relentless 63-minute shift before being replaced by Aleksey Isayev, Nwachukwu’s equaliser set the stage for an unforgettable night.

After Guy Mizrahi restored Hapoel’s lead around the hour mark, Umarali Rakhmonaliev’s 25-yard thunderbolt brought the Owls level again.

In the 94th minute, Tellur Mütallimov volleyed home a corner to force extra time in dramatic fashion.

Against a nine-man Hapoel side that saw Djibril Diop and Eliel Peretz sent off, extra-time goals from Orphé Mbina and Joy-Lance Mickels sealed an astonishing 5-2 win on the night and a 6-4 aggregate triumph.

From riding the bench in the earlier rounds to sparking a historic European miracle, Nwachukwu has announced himself on the biggest stage.
