Veteran Nigerian musician Seyi Sodimu has stirred fresh conversation around celebrity influence and politics after stating that Afrobeats star Davido has the popularity and public appeal to win a governorship election if he decides to contest today.

Sodimu made the statement during an episode of the What I Know podcast, which was reported by Nigerian entertainment media on Monday, January 19, 2026.

While speaking on the podcast, the singer assessed the impact of the Afrobeats “Big Three” Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy and how their influence extends beyond music.

“The Afrobeats Big 3, each one is doing music for different reasons,” Sodimu said.

“Burna Boy has conquered the stage, and he is very good,” he added.

“Wizkid is special,” Sodimu further stated.

Sodimu, however, reserved his strongest remark for Davido, whom he described as an artist whose influence goes beyond entertainment.

“Davido surpasses music,” he said.

Explaining his point, the veteran musician linked Davido’s widespread acceptance and connection with Nigerians to political relevance.

“If Davido ran for governor today, he would win,” Sodimu said.

Sodimu also noted that not all musical success easily translates to political appeal, drawing a clear distinction between Davido and other top artistes.

“I don’t think Burna Boy could win as governor,” he added.

The statement quickly gained attention across entertainment platforms, largely due to Davido’s strong grassroots following and his well-known ties to politics through his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State.

Although Sodimu’s comment was hypothetical, it has reignited discussions on how Nigerian entertainers are increasingly shaping public opinion and influencing conversations far beyond the music industry.

As of Monday, January 19th, 2026, Davido has not made any public statement indicating interest in contesting for political office.
