American rapper and YouTuber Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has sparked conversations online after saying he feels safer in Nigeria than in the United States during his visit to the country.

DDG made the remark during his January 2026 visit to Lagos, with the video circulating widely on social media and drawing reactions from Nigerians at home and abroad.

Speaking in the video, the rapper said:

“Coming out here lets me know that America is the most divided country ever.”

He added:

“Out here, everybody is one.”

” I feel safer here than I feel in America.”

DDG also compared crime motivations in both countries, stating:

“I might get robbed, but it ain’t no robbing out of hate.”

“It’s robbing out of need.”

Following the circulation of the video, Nigerians took to social media platform X to share their opinions on DDG’s comments.

However, some users supported DDG’s view by comparing safety concerns in the United States and Nigeria.

“Fact! As he get money, nothing go make am go the dangerous part but for US, everywhere na danger cus of license to gun.”

Another user, @6_Tomi_Tomi, added:
“School shooting happens every week / day in the US.”

” A major news page on this platform posted that school shooting didn’t happen in a day in the whole of America & few hours later they added a community notes saying school shooting happened in a state that day.”

Similarly, @Nomardicspring9 supported DDG’s comment on crime, saying:
“Truly people don’t rob you cuz they hate you, they don cuz they need to fulfil the basic needs of life, give some these 3 things, they have no reason to rob you.”

DDG’s comments and the reactions they generated were widely reported on January 6, 2026, as debates continued around safety, privilege, and lived experiences in Nigeria compared to the United States.
