Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters through the Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke has issued a safety advisory to mariners and riverine communities, warning them of increased risks on inland waterways due to rising water levels during the rainy season.
The advisory, issued on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, highlights that the surge in water volume has led to stronger currents and turbulence, raising the likelihood of boat accidents and loss of lives and property.

Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, called on boat operators, passengers, and residents engaged in riverine activities to strictly adhere to safety measures aimed at preventing mishaps.
Among the directives, all passengers are required to wear life jackets at all times, while boat operators must ensure the availability of life buoys onboard. Overloading of boats has been strictly prohibited, and operators are advised to carry essential emergency items such as torchlights, spare spark plugs, and tarpaulins.
The Command also reiterated the ban on night sailing, restricting all marine operations to between 6:30am and 6:00pm daily for security reasons, stating that the boat operators are required to register with their respective unions and carry valid identification while operating.
In addition, riverine communities have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, while all maritime users are cautioned against polluting waterways with waste materials.
Lieutenant Commander Zakari warned that defaulters would face sanctions in line with existing regulations, stressing the need for maritime unions to enforce compliance among their members.
Operation Whirl Stroke reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety and security on waterways, urging the public to cooperate with authorities and observe all safety guidelines.
