Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has urged residents to remain calm amidst unsettling reports on the commencement of political war this new year, emphasizing that his administration remains focused on advancing the state’s interests.

In his New Year message during a crossover service at Government House Chapel,, Port Harcourt, Fubara expressed optimism that 2026 will bring improved fortunes, citing his reliance on God Almighty. He acknowledged challenges in the past two years but assured progress and development in the new year 2026.

The Governor’s stance comes amidst recent political threats by the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his loyalists on the commencement of political war in 2026 which has added to the escalating tensions in Rivers State.

Wike’s camp is reportedly displeased with Fubara’s decision to award contracts to loyalists, seeing it as a grassroots mobilisation strategy. The FCT Minister has also dismissed claims that Fubara automatically became APC leader in Rivers State following his defection, stating “Leadership is not conferred simply because you are governor”.

The feud has intensified with Wike threatening to reveal details of an agreement with Fubara if the governor fails to make it public. He claims President Tinubu has fulfilled promises, citing his appointment as FCT Minister and strategic federal positions for Rivers indigenes.

Wike’s actions have been seen as attempts to maintain control, with some accusing him of pushing for commissioner slots. Fubara’s defection to APC is viewed as a game-changer, potentially securing his re-election, a permutation which many believe Wike is opposed to and is attempting to vehemently resist.

The PDP has accused Wike of fearing loss of influence and Tinubu’s favour, labelling his conduct as “incompatible with democratic norms and party loyalty”.

The brewing imbroglio subjects Rivers State to the edge as the new year sets in. Stakeholders are already calling for calm in the best interest of the state. They are of the view that full recovery is yet to be attained after the 6 months emergency rule, underscoring why another round of political back-and-forth among the gladiators could plunge the state into social heamhorage with far-reaching consequences.
