The Energy and Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria, EMR, Rivers State Council, says all is set for the commemoration of the 2026 World Oceans Day in Port Harcourt.

The event, scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, will begin at 10 a.m.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the association, Martins Giadom, and Secretary, Ilanye Jumbo, EMR said this year’s celebration is themed, “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate.”

The association noted that oceans and waterways play a critical role in sustaining fishing communities, supporting maritime trade, and regulating the global climate. It, however, expressed concern over increasing threats posed by plastic pollution, oil spills, and other environmental hazards affecting coastal communities across the Niger Delta.

EMR has called on stakeholders in the maritime, environmental, and oil and gas sectors, as well as members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the general public, to participate in the event.

The association says collective action remains critical to protecting the ocean, tackling climate challenges, and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
