The People’s Elephant slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Ikorodu City on Sunday, a result that has deepened concerns around the club’s direction and leadership under Nwankwo Kanu.

Enyimba Crisis Deepens as Pressure Mounts on Nwankwo Kanu

The loss to Ikorodu City marked Enyimba’s second straight defeat, following a 2-0 setback against Bendel Insurance in Benin.

For a side with a proud record in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the recent run has raised serious questions.

Enyimba now sit 14th on the NPFL table with 31 points after 26 matches. They are just two points above 17th-placed Kano Pillars, a position that leaves little room for further mistakes.

Another poor result could drag the former champions closer to the relegation zone.

The numbers shows the struggle. Enyimba have recorded eight wins, seven draws and 11 defeats so far this season. For a club of their stature, that return falls below expectations.

The situation has not improved despite managerial changes. The club parted ways with Stanley Eguma earlier in the campaign and appointed a replacement, but results have yet to show any clear progress.

Fans Protest Against Nwankwo Kanu After Enyimba Defeat

Tensions boiled over after Sunday’s home loss. In a video shared by Port Harcourt-based journalist China Acheru, angry supporters were seen protesting and calling for the removal of chairman Nwankwo Kanu.

The former Super Eagles captain, popularly known as Papilo, has been at the centre of criticism from sections of the fan base.

Some supporters claimed he has not been visible enough around the team and questioned his level of involvement in the day-to-day running of Enyimba.

Chants demanding change echoed around the stadium, with fans expressing frustration over the club’s current position and performance. For many, the defeat at home was a breaking point.

Enyimba’s proud history as multiple NPFL champions and continental contenders has set high standards. Supporters expect stability, clear leadership and consistent results — all of which appear uncertain at the moment.

A Defining Trip to Rivers United

Attention now shifts to their next fixture against Rivers United in Port Harcourt. Rivers United, who were recently eliminated from the CAF Champions League group stage, will be eager to respond on home soil.

For Enyimba, the trip offers a chance to steady the ship. Securing points away from home could ease the pressure and restore some confidence within the squad.

However, the question remains: if Enyimba are struggling to protect their home ground, can they produce the resilience required on the road?

The coming days may prove decisive not only for the team’s league ambitions but also for the future of Nwankwo Kanu at the helm.
