Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has challenged his players to maintain higher standards after Nigeria delivered an assured 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final.

Chelle made it clear that progress at the tournament will depend on sustained effort, not isolated results.

Chelle struck a calm but demanding tone after the match, shutting down any off-field discussions and keeping the spotlight firmly on performance.

The coach insisted that his full attention before kickoff was on overcoming Algeria—a focus that paid off with one of Nigeria’s most controlled displays of the competition so far.

After a measured first half, the Super Eagles stepped up their intensity after the break and took control of the contest.

Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, rising above the defence to head home a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi.

Nigeria doubled their advantage ten minutes later through Akor Adams, who latched onto a clever pass from Osimhen, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly finished to seal the result.

Osimhen’s influence throughout the match earned him the Man of the Match award.

Despite the convincing nature of the win, the Eagles gaffer was quick to temper the celebrations, reminding his squad that ambition must be matched by continuous hard work.

“We played very well and deserved the win. I’m proud of the players,” Chelle said. “But this is just one step. If you want to achieve something special, you have to keep working because another big challenge is coming.”

Super Eagles shift focus to Morocco test

With Algeria now out of the way, the Super Eagles will face hosts Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday, January 14, as they chase a fourth African title.

The other last-four clash will see defending champions Senegal take on seven-time winners Egypt, setting the stage for a dramatic end to AFCON 2025.

As the pressure rises, Eric Chelle’s message remains consistent: strong performances are important, but only higher standards will see Nigeria finish at the top.
