Rivers United coach Finidi George has expressed frustration after his team’s 1-1 draw against Enyimba FC, criticising the opponent’s approach and questioning officiating standards in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

The ex-Nigerian international turned coach spoke openly about time-wasting tactics and match management during the Round 27 encounter at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Rivers United dominated large parts of the game but struggled to convert early chances.

A defensive mistake inside the penalty area allowed the visitors to take the lead before halftime.

Despite the setback, the home side fought back before the break and continued pushing for a winning goal in the second half.

In his post-match conference, Finidi George was especially vocal about what he described as a slow game rhythm caused by repeated stoppages.

“Player will fall; in two minutes he will stand up; the next one will do that, you know, 30 seconds, one minute; at the end of the day they (referees) gave us two minutes (extra time) in the first half. In the second half, the same thing happened. These are the things you see in the league.

We have to be better, not only we talk about teams. Everybody has to be better, for the league to grow. I don’t think that was the best officiating that we have seen this season.”

The coach stressed that improving discipline and match tempo is important for the overall growth of Nigerian football and league competitiveness.

Penalty Appeal Controversy and Match Refereeing Standards

The Rivers United technical bench also felt disappointed over a penalty decision that went against them. Finidi admitted the call was difficult to accept but emphasised professionalism in moving forward.

“Yes, we felt it was a clear penalty. But it’s the referee’s decision to give it or not. So, yes, he has taken that decision not to give it; we have to accept it and move forward. Now we have to think about the next match coming up on Wednesday.”

The officiating discussion continues to be a recurring theme in league football, especially in tight title races where every point matters.

CAF Champions League Lessons and Team Development

Looking back at continental competition, Finidi reflected on Rivers United’s performance in the CAF Champions League. He believes the experience will help younger players grow.

“I feel that one is gone; we know where we got it wrong. It’s a general thing. Next season, I think we’ll do a better job if we find ourselves in the same competition. I know some of the players have not played in that magnitude of games. So, it’s a learning process for them, a lesson learnt.”

He added that winning the domestic league remains a priority for the club as they push for top honours.

Rivers United now shift attention to their upcoming league fixture against Barau FC. Finidi George described the match as another tough test as the club continues its title chase.

“Every game is difficult. But it’s going to be different from the Enyimba match. We are looking forward to another good game. Difficult one because of where we find ourselves.

At the same time, we also want to keep pushing for the title.”
