Following the preliminary round draws conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League, Nigeria’s NPFL runners-up have been handed a intriguing West African showdown against Ivorian side FC San Pédro.
Former Super Eagles star and current Rivers United gaffer, Finidi George, isn’t panicking about the clash.
Speaking shortly after the pairings were confirmed, the head coach shared a calm, tactical perspective on what lies ahead for the Pride of Rivers.
“It’s not a bad one, just that you don’t know what’s going to happen in these games. But it’s quite a fair one,” Finidi stated. “We’ll see how we can know more about them and see how we can strategise.”
Crucially, Rivers United hold what many consider a vital tactical advantage: traveling away for the opening leg before returning home to secure the tie.
“We are going there first, so that is a good thing,” Finidi added. “We’ll see how we can get a good result over there. We’ll come back home and see how we can get to the next preliminaries.”
The Pride of Rivers will begin their quest for the lucrative group stage with the first leg scheduled between September 4 and September 6 in Côte d’Ivoire.
The deciding return leg will take place in Nigeria shortly after, from September 11 to September 13.
If Finidi George’s men navigate past the experienced Ivorian outfit over two legs, a second preliminary round tie against either Uganda’s Vipers SC or Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou awaits them.
The journey is long, but the blueprint for success is already taking shape.
