Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, citing the need to prioritise peace, unity, and stability in the state.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday May 20, 2026, the governor said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, friends, and political associates.
Fubara described the move as “difficult but necessary,” stressing that leadership requires sacrifice and that personal ambition must give way to the greater good.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over all personal interests,” he said.
The governor however pledged his full support for whoever emerges as the APC gubernatorial candidate, urging party members to remain united and committed to the party’s objectives.
Addressing his supporters, Fubara acknowledged their sacrifices and expressed gratitude for their loyalty, while also recognising the disappointment his decision may cause.
“I understand the disappointment, anger, and pain many of you may feel. However, your loyalty and trust were not in vain,” he stated.
He hinted at underlying challenges surrounding his decision, noting that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices,” but maintained that his actions were guided by the overall interest of the state.
The governor also thanked the APC for providing him with a platform and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.
Reaffirming his commitment to governance, Fubara emphasised that his withdrawal should not be misconstrued as weakness.
“My decision to step aside is not borne out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but of conviction and sacrifice, so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
He assured residents of his continued dedication to serving the state until the end of his tenure.
