The Bonny Gentlemen’s League (BGL) has called on the Rivers State Government to prioritise Bonny Local Government Area for strategic infrastructure development, citing a 26-year absence of state-executed projects in the area since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
The BGL made this call in a communique it issued on Friday, January 8, 2026, expressing concern that despite Bonny’s significant role in sustaining the state’s economy, no Rivers State Governor has initiated or commissioned any major state project in the area.

The group called on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara to correct the imbalance by approving and delivering legacy projects that would enhance connectivity, education and economic integration before the end of his tenure in 2027.
Among the projects listed for immediate action are the long-proposed Bonny Ring Road to link eastern communities to the Bonny mainland; internal road networks, including a coastal route from Coal Beach to the Bodo–Bonny Road; and the upgrade of key public schools, including Bonny National Grammar School and Government Girls Secondary School, Finima.

The League also highlighted the need for the Peterside–Fibiri–Kalaibiama–Kuruma Road, which would connect Bonny Island to Port Harcourt through the Trans Kalabari Road, describing it as critical for regional integration and economic growth.
Beyond infrastructure, the League called on the state’s leadership to adopt a more collaborative and people-focused approach to governance, stressing that development, not political divisions, should define Rivers State’s priorities.
