The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the speedy completion of the Oyorokoto Beach Road project as part of broader efforts to position the state as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara gave the assurance on Monday, July 27, 2026, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and the Rivers State Government on the Renewed Hope Cultural Projects at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The Governor said the state has consistently invested in tourism as a strategy to create employment opportunities, expand leisure and recreational activities, and diversify the state’s economy. He noted that both the Oyorokoto Beach Resort and the ongoing Port Harcourt Tourist Beach project would significantly enhance Rivers State’s tourism potential.
“We had this project in Andoni, the Oyorokoto road. The Oyorokoto road is the project that opened up that axis of Rivers State. Oyorokoto is one of the best beaches in this country and today, I can tell you, over the internet, I’ve been seeing pictures of elephants, lions and all sorts of wide life have been showcased as part of the inventions of that new road.
What are we talking about, it is not just about building roads, it is not about building hospitals but building economy for entertainment, economy for relaxation”.
Governor Fubara also assured stakeholders that the state would move beyond signing agreements by delivering tangible results within the next four months. He commended the Federal Government for selecting Rivers State as one of the states to drive its tourism development agenda.
“I wasn’t surprised when the Minister sent a letter to us that they will really want us to go into this Renewed Hope Agenda for tourism development, I said yes, whatever it is, we are going to key into it. And I can assure you here, we are not just about signing this agreement, we will make sure that we go further than signing but invite you here in the next 4 months to come and unveil something.
Also, for picking Rivers State as one of the key states that you want to unveil this project in, Rivers State will not forget this honour that you have given to them”.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, described the Oyorokoto road project as an important initiative that would support economic diversification, generate employment and promote Nigeria’s cultural and creative sectors.
“What we have is a MoU on the Renewed Hope Culture Project. It is a project that explores the sector of culture, tourism and creative industry. And we are willing to capture what you have already done in the state. And as we see what we can do at the Federal level to continue to support you so that we can use it as tourism hub, as a cultural hub, as a creative hub and of course as an arts space as well.
As I came into Rivers State, I can see a huge divers culture, we were welcome up here by a very beautiful dance, it is a diverse culture and at the same time I think Rivers State already ready, it’s one of the low hanging fruits for us to push tourism”. The Minister revealed.
