The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, has paid glowing tribute to former Heartland Football Club General Manager, Promise Nwachukwu, describing his death as a painful loss to the football community in Imo State and Nigeria.
In a press statement released on Monday, July 20, 2026, the association said it received the news of Nwachukwu’s passing with deep sorrow, noting that he dedicated many years of his life to the growth of football administration and remained a dependable ally of sports journalists throughout his career.
The statement, signed by Imo SWAN Chairman, Cosmos Chukwuemeka, said Nwachukwu’s contributions to Heartland FC and Nigerian football would remain indelible, adding that his commitment, humility and professionalism earned him widespread respect across the sports fraternity.
According to the association, Nwachukwu was more than a football administrator, as he consistently maintained cordial relationships with sports journalists and worked tirelessly to advance football development in the state.
Chukwuemeka described the late administrator as “a bridge-builder whose passion for football administration and support for sports journalism will never be forgotten.”
The association said his death had created a huge vacuum within Imo’s football family, stressing that his dedication to duty and willingness to support media practitioners distinguished him throughout his years of service.
SWAN extended its condolences to Nwachukwu’s family, Heartland FC, friends, associates and the entire football community, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those mourning his passing.
Heartland FC also mourned the former General Manager, recalling that Nwachukwu devoted nearly two decades to the club in several capacities, including Assistant Team Manager, Team Manager, Sporting Director and Acting General Manager.
The club further noted that beyond Heartland, Nwachukwu served as Coordinator of the Nigeria Premier Football League Club Owners Association, where he contributed to football administration at the national level.
In its condolence message, Heartland said, “Promise Nwachukwu will always be remembered for his commitment, loyalty and invaluable service to Heartland FC. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Founded in 1976, Heartland FC remains one of Nigeria’s most historic football clubs, having won five top-flight league titles and reached the final of the CAF Champions League in 2009.
The club said Nwachukwu’s years of service formed part of its rich administrative history and that his legacy would continue to inspire those committed to the growth of football in Imo State and beyond.
