The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation of the Ogoni cleanup initiative following a strategic engagement with leaders of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) in Port Harcourt.
The meeting, held at HYPREP’s Project Coordination Office on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange views and reinforce collaboration aimed at advancing the Ogoni Cleanup Programme.

Speaking during the engagement, HYPREP Project Coordinator Nenibarini Zabbey described the visit as a positive sign of MOSOP’s sustained interest in the progress of the cleanup project. He noted that the Federal Government remains committed to accelerating the implementation of the programme.
Zabbey highlighted several milestones already recorded under the initiative, including soil and shoreline remediation, mangrove restoration, and the provision of potable water to affected communities. He also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects such as the construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration (CEER), the 100-bed and 43-bed Ogoni Specialist Hospitals, and the Buan Cottage Hospital.
Other interventions, according to him, include the Ogoni Power Project and livelihood restoration programmes designed to improve the economic wellbeing of communities impacted by decades of oil pollution.

Leaders of MOSOP present at the meeting also stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between the organisation and HYPREP to ensure the success of the cleanup programme.
Among those who spoke were MOSOP leaders Legborsi Pyagbara, Prince Biira, Anda Wai-Ogosu, Lazarus Tamana, and Fegalo Nsuke, who was represented at the meeting by Alex Akori.

They collectively emphasised the need for stronger synergy between stakeholders to guarantee transparency, efficiency, and long-term environmental restoration in Ogoniland.
Other MOSOP chieftains in attendance included Kammy Ngelale, Bari-ara Kpalap, Gad Nwigbalor, Nyiedah Naasikpo, Stephen Nmaane, and Ledogo Amabu. Also present were members of the HYPREP management team, including the Director of Technical Services, Damian-Paul Aguiyi, and several unit heads.

The Ogoni Cleanup Programme, launched by the Federal Government following recommendations from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to address decades of environmental degradation caused by oil exploration in Ogoniland.
