Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s drive towards self-sufficiency in the production and supply of petroleum products.
Jonathan made the remark on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, during an unscheduled visit to the construction site of Azikel Refinery in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The former President visited the refinery to assess the progress of work at the project, a move described by observers as a major show of support for local refining initiatives in the country.
During a tour of the facility, Jonathan commended the President of Azikel Group, Dr. Eruani Azibapu, describing the project as a significant effort to boost Nigeria’s local refining capacity.
He stressed the importance of such projects in promoting local content and achieving self-reliance in energy production.
Jonathan noted that Azikel Refinery, alongside the Dangote Refinery, plays a critical role in Nigeria’s journey towards energy security and independence.
He expressed optimism about the commitment of the Azikel team to completing the project in record time and improving domestic supply of refined petroleum products, and wished the Group success as it moves closer to delivery.
