The Federal University of Environment and Technology, FUET, has received a major boost for expansion after the host community of Kira in Tai LGA donated 1,040 additional plots of land to the institution.
The donation was formalized on Monday, July 20, 2026, at the Saakpenwa campus, as the university prepares for a projected doubling of student intake in the next academic session.
The Paramount Ruler of Kenbara-Kira community, Chief Michael Nbete N-yor, led the presentation alongside Ward 5 political leader, Gideon Deemor; Kenbara-Kira CDC Chairman, Ebenezer Odike; members of the Council of Chiefs and Elders; and principal landlords.
Handing over the land documents to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Chief N-yor described the gesture as a “freewill contribution” to support the growth and infrastructural development of the newly established university.
Accepting on behalf of the institution, the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor thanked the community for what he called an “uncommon sacrifice” toward the development of Ogoniland, Rivers State, and Nigeria, for both present and future generations.
Members of the University’s management, including the newly elected Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pioneer Registrar, Monday Mpigi, were present. Also in attendance were members of the Kira Community Contact Committee: Assoc. Prof. Monday Agabe, Timothy Kerebana, Chief Michael Nziadam, Martins Ntubi, and Ndume Green.
FUET was established following the signing of its enabling bill into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 3, 2025. The bill was first sponsored in the National Assembly on November 26, 2019 by the late Senator Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South-East.
University officials say the additional land will be critical to accommodating new faculties, student hostels, and research facilities as FUET scales up operations.
