As the Nigeria Premier Football League enters its final stages, the Owerri-based side is preparing for a vital home match against Warri Wolves this weekend.

Despite being at the bottom of the table, the mood in the camp has shifted. A recent 1-0 away victory against Nasarawa United ended a tough three-game winless streak.

In that match, Stanley Otu scored a dramatic goal in stoppage time to secure all three points. For the left winger, that result was a turning point for the squad’s morale.

The team had previously struggled, picking up only one point from matches against Bendel Insurance, Rivers United, and Ikorodu City.

However, the win in Lafia has renewed hope that they can avoid the drop. Nnorom Mmesoma notes that the players are now united and ready for the battles ahead.

High Stakes for Nnorom Mmesoma and Kun Khalifat

With only five games left in the season, every point is a lifeline. Kun Khalifat currently sits on 36 points after 32 matches.

Their record shows nine wins, nine draws, and 14 losses. While they have scored 31 goals—with Ebuka Nwokorie leading the scoring chart with five goals—they have conceded 37.

Mmesoma understands that the margin for error is gone. The upcoming run includes a trip to Plateau United, followed by tough fixtures against Kano Pillars and Abia Warriors. The season will eventually conclude on May 24 against Wikki Tourists.

Speaking on the team’s mindset, the Kun Khalifat star shared the current feeling inside the dressing room:

“As players, we are in good spirits as we have been on a good run, so the confidence is high. We know the stakes are high, especially going into this remaining 5 to end the season. Everyone is going to go into the game fully focused and confident, so we can do our best,” he said as quoted by the team media.

The journey toward safety begins this weekend. If Nnorom Mmesoma and his teammates can maintain their focus, the “Great Escape” might just become a reality.
