An Ogoni-born military personnel, Major General Lezorgia Nzidee, has pledged to facilitate the renovation of classroom blocks at Government Secondary School (GSS), Sogho, his Alma Mater, as a parting gift marking the end of a successful hosting of the Nigerian Army Day in Rivers State.
The assurance came during an unofficial visit to the school on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, on the sidelines of the week-long Nigerian Army Day Celebration activities in Rivers State.
Major General Nzidee, an alumnus of the institution, toured the school to assess its condition and expressed concern over the deteriorating state of its infrastructure, while lamenting the difficult circumstances under which the pupils were learning.
According to him, the level of decay in the school was alarming, needing urgent intervention.
As Primary and Secondary Schools in Rivers State wind down activities towards the end of the 2025/2026 academic calendar, the concerned Army General announced his resolve to partner with the school’s management in commencing rehabilitation work on the infrastructure ahead of resumption for the next school year this September.
During the visit, General Nzidee commended the President of the Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme Consultative Forum (KAGOTE), Lesi Maol, for supporting education through the recruitment of classroom teachers for schools across Ogoni, an initiative that was recently undertaken by the Ogoni apex sociocultural group.
Major General Nzidee further stated that, with the cooperation of the leadership of Sogho Community and other relevant stakeholders, he was prepared to initiate more projects aimed at restoring the school’s lost glory.
He also used the medium to appeal to the Rivers State Government to prioritise the rehabilitation of the institution to restore it to a conducive learning environment.
