Fresh details have emerged following the recent crackdown on a drug enclave in Bonny Island, Rivers State, where six suspected drug dealers were arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In a statement by NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency confirmed that one of its operatives, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, died from injuries sustained during the operation after suspected drug dealers allegedly mobilised armed hoodlums to resist arrest.

The raid, carried out at the Amaomu area of Bonny, which is densely populated by members of the Northern community, on February 6, 2026, led to the seizure of significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis, and tramadol.

The NDLEA also confirmed the arrest of six suspects, including alleged gang leader Genesis George Benson, alongside ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed, and Muhammed Yusuf.

According to NDLEA, the operation initially recorded success with arrests and seizures before turning violent when the suspects reportedly attempted to free their associates, resulting in a confrontation that left the officer fatally injured.

NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), commended officers involved in the operation, describing their actions as courageous despite the deadly resistance encountered.

“I salute the gallantry of our men who refused to be intimidated by criminal elements.”

“Even after the attack that claimed the life of our officer, the operatives ensured the suspects were arrested and the illicit drugs recovered. His sacrifice will not be in vain.” Marwa said.

He assured that the agency remains committed to dismantling drug networks nationwide and warned that attacks on security personnel would not go unpunished.

The six suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with authorities preparing to prosecute those involved.

Meanwhile, security agencies are also working to apprehend other accomplices believed to have participated in the attack.
