The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has issued a nationwide preparedness advisory following a flash flood risk warning by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, for 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
In its Probable Flash Flood Risk Map for the second decade of July 2026, covering July 11 to 20, NiMet said persistent rainfall and saturated soils have increased the likelihood of flash flooding across the country.
According to a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, the states listed are: Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and the FCT.
NiMet noted that rainfall in June and early July has reduced soil absorption capacity, raising the risk of rapid surface runoff in low-lying areas, urban centers with poor drainage, and coastal communities.
According to the advisory, the expected flooding could be hazardous as it can lead to Disruption of transportation and road networks, Damage to critical infrastructure, Losses in agricultural production, Increased risk of waterborne diseases, and Threats to lives and livelihoods
In response, NEMA has directed State Emergency Management Agencies, (SEMAs), Local Emergency Management Committees, (LEMCs), and relevant MDAs to intensify preparedness, strengthen coordination, and activate contingency plans.
The Agency also urged residents in flood-prone areas to Monitor official weather forecasts and early warning bulletins, Clear drainage channels and waterways, Avoid indiscriminate refuse disposal, Refrain from walking or driving through floodwaters, and Report emergencies promptly to authorities

Authorities have advised communities to take the warning seriously as rainfall is expected to intensify this week.
