Nigeria enjoyed a successful day at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as the country’s duo of Jennifer Obi Chikwuka and Olayinka Olajide secured qualification for Team Nigeria in the women’s 200m event.
Both athletes impressed in their respective heats to book places in the semi-finals, giving Nigeria a strong presence in the athletics competition.
Chikwuka was outstanding in the opening round, producing a personal best time of 23.26 seconds to win her race and secure automatic qualification.
Canada’s Marie Eloise Leclair finished second with 23.50 seconds, while Gambia’s Nyimansata Jawneh claimed the final qualification spot after finishing third in 23.74 seconds.
In Heat 5, Olajide also progressed to the semi-finals after recording a third-place finish with a time of 23.62 seconds. She finished behind Jamaica’s Lavanya Williams, who won the race in 22.91 seconds.
The impressive performances from both Nigerian athletes continue to highlight the country’s strength in athletics at the Commonwealth Games.
