Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40, according to multiple reports and tributes shared by colleagues in the Nigerian film industry.

His death was confirmed on Tuesday by fellow actors Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who took to social media to mourn the late actor.

Reacting via her Instagram story, Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex.”

” I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best.”

“May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex.”

” ‘Ore mi’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”

Ninalowo, who is currently in the United States, also paid tribute, writing, “Rest on, Alex.”

“May God heal your family and us all.”

In an emotional message, Nnadiekwe said, “I’m struggling to find the words.”

“This news has truly broken me.”

“Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo.”

“To think you already prepared your Will, it’s heartbreaking.”

“Rest well, my friend.”

As of the time of filing this report, the family of the late actor had yet to release an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ekubo’s death comes weeks after concerns about his wellbeing surfaced online following his first public appearance after months away from social media.

The actor had remained inactive on Instagram since December 30, 2024, prompting widespread speculation among fans.

A viral video recently shared online showed the actor interacting with children, appearing noticeably slimmer and quieter than usual.

The footage triggered emotional reactions from fans, many of whom expressed concern over his appearance and health.

Before his death, the actor had openly spoken about prioritising his career and financial growth over marriage.

Alex Ekubo was widely known for his roles in numerous Nollywood productions and was regarded as one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.
