Kwara United have been hit with a series of heavy sanctions following violent incidents involving their supporters during the NPFL Matchday 22 rearranged fixture against Rivers United on February 18, 2026, at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.

The Ilorin-based club failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised individuals to access restricted areas.

Security Lapses and Fan Misconduct Under Scrutiny

The situation escalated when supporters harassed and injured match officials as well as officials from Rivers United. The violent behavior has drawn severe penalties from the league authorities.

Kwara United supporters physically assaulted match officials and Rivers United officials, causing bodily harm and bringing the game into disrepute with unsporting behavior.

In addition, some officials were reportedly held for several hours after the match, further aggravating the offense.

Fines, Point Deductions, and Venue Changes

The NPFL has imposed multiple fines totaling N9 million on Kwara United.

This includes N3 million for failing to provide proper security and manage supporter conduct, N3 million for assaults and unsporting behavior, and another N3 million covering the detention of officials and compensation for injuries.

Beyond financial penalties, the club faces point and goal deductions—three points and three goals removed from their season tally.

Kwara United will also play remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

The league has ordered the identification and prosecution of the supporters responsible, with documented evidence of compliance required.

The club has 48 hours from the date of notice to file an appeal against these sanctions.
