The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Gift Worlu, has visited the Oro-Owo community in Rumueme Kingdom following the fire outbreak that destroyed properties in the area on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of damage, sympathising with affected residents, and exploring ways the council can support victims of the incident.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Worlu said his presence was to stand in solidarity with families affected by the fire and reassure them of government support.

According to him, government has a responsibility to protect and support citizens, particularly during times of hardship, adding that efforts would be made to help victims recover from their losses.

The council chairman also disclosed that authorities would work with community leaders to determine the cause of the fire in order to prevent future incidents.

He urged residents to comply with proper housing and safety standards, warning that poor building structures and unsafe living conditions often increase fire risks.

He noted that Obio/Akpor has grown into a major urban centre and residents must adopt modern housing and safety practices to reduce disasters.

Dr. Worlu further mentioned that the local government is working towards establishing an Emergency Management System expected to become operational before mid-year, which will improve emergency response through better manpower, equipment, and crisis coordination.

While expressing gratitude that no lives were lost, he assured victims that the council would look into ways of easing their hardship and helping them rebuild.

Several community leaders and stakeholders, including Ward 10 representatives and former government officials, were present during the assessment visit.
