Okrika Students Lament Blackout, Says It Affecting Their Academics

Some secondary school students in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State have raised alarm over the perennial blackout in the area, saying it has made life unbearable for them.

A student of Excel Comprehensive College, Okrika, Tamunoiyowuna Aggo, who spoke to Kristina Reports on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 in Okrika, Rivers State lamented that the situation has become worrisome and is affecting her badly.

“It’s disturbing because I need light to iron my uniform, and fuel is very expensive and we can’t use it to iron. Again, I have to bathe hot water because of the weather, without light, I can’t heat my water.

“I’ll have to get kerosene or use the gas which is also expensive. I would appreciate if the government of Okrika can look into this situation.”

In another chat with Kristina Reports, an SS2 student of the same school, Wealth Mangibo said his academic life is suffering because of the blackout.

“I don’t enjoy the fact that I have to look tattered when coming to school, my uniform is rumpled because there’s no light to iron.

“Secondly, I can’t do my assignments very well cus my gadgets for research are not charged. Even if I take it to a charging center, it won’t get full and halfway into the assignment, the gadget just shuts down.”

Efforts to reach the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and the caretaker Committee Chairman of Okrika LGA, Ibiene Ogan on the situation proved futile as at press time.
