Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced that he plans to leave active politics after completing his tenure, saying younger Nigerians should be given the opportunity to assume leadership positions.
Otti made the declaration on Thursday in Umuahia while speaking on governance and political succession.
The governor said improved governance could strengthen citizens’ confidence in democratic leadership and make it difficult for what he described as the “old order” to return.
“Once I finish this one, I will retire. Why do I say so? I want the young people to take over,” Otti said.
He also dismissed the possibility of seeking elective office after his tenure, including a seat in the Senate, stressing that he had no plans to continue his political career.
Otti further said he had no interest in becoming a political godfather, declaring, “I don’t want to be a godfather. And I don’t tolerate godfathers.”
According to him, political leadership should not be monopolised by individuals who remain in office or seek influence indefinitely.
He argued that younger Nigerians are increasingly acquiring the education, skills and experience required to contribute meaningfully to governance.
“We should stop this sit-tight; it’s only you. Not only you, it also can’t be only you. There are smarter, more trained, better trained, better equipped younger people. Our children, we need to give them opportunities,” he said.
