The Paramount Ruler of Nonwa Tai Community, His Royal Highness Castro Tomakara Nyiedam, has described the Police Training College in Nonwa Tai as an “abandoned settlement” and has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for urgent rehabilitation.
The monarch made the call on Monday, July 28, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the college where he met with the Commandant, ACP Okere Daniel. The visit was part of his familiarisation tour of institutions within his domain to foster collaboration for peace and development.
During inspection of the premises, Chief Nyiedam expressed concern over dilapidated buildings, especially the Commandant’s official residence, which he described as “heartbreaking.” He lamented the absence of functional classrooms, hostels, toilets, and bathrooms, and noted that the institution was being overtaken by bushes.
“No police officer should be made to live under such poor conditions,” he said. “The entire environment has deteriorated, lacking the basic safe, healthy and dignified standards required of a living, learning or working environment.”
The Paramount Ruler also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, to intervene, stressing that the current state of the facility poses serious threats to officers and trainees.
He, however, commended ACP Okere and his team for their dedication and discipline despite the challenges, and assured them of the community’s support.
In response, ACP Okere thanked the Royal Father for the visit and for drawing attention to the challenges. He pledged to work closely with the traditional institution to promote peace and development in Nonwa Tai.
