Residents of Owaza Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State were thrown into grief and panic in the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, following a high-pressure pipeline explosion that caused extensive damage in Umuololo Village.

The explosion occurred along a major pipeline that transports crude oil from the Imo River Flow Station in Owaza to Port Harcourt and Bonny. According to reports, the incident was caused by the deteriorating condition and system failure of the aging pipeline infrastructure.

The powerful blast destroyed residential buildings, farmlands, crops, plantain plantations, and other valuable properties. The resulting oil spillage also contaminated large portions of farmland, raising concerns about food security and environmental degradation in the area.

Among the worst-hit victims is a prominent son of the community, David Ogbonna, popularly known as “Chiwowo,” whose residential building suffered significant damage. His farmlands, crops, and other valuable possessions were also destroyed by the impact of the explosion and subsequent oil spillage.

Speaking on the incident, community spokesperson, Anselem Eletuo, described the affected pipeline as overdue for replacement and called on the relevant authorities and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), which oversees the facility, to take urgent action.

He appealed for immediate intervention, noting that many residents have been rendered homeless while others have lost their primary sources of livelihood due to the destruction of farmlands and crops.

Eletuo also urged the youths of the community to remain calm and law-abiding, expressing confidence that both the government and the company responsible for the pipeline would provide relief materials and take necessary steps to mitigate the effects of the oil spillage.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety and maintenance of oil infrastructure in host communities across the Niger Delta, with residents calling for urgent measures to prevent future disasters.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from NPDC regarding the explosion and the extent of the damage caused.

Residents are now awaiting swift intervention and compensation as they grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
