Plateau United head coach Gbenga Ogunbote has pointed to poor playing conditions and a brief loss of focus as the main reasons for his team’s recent defeat.

Plateau United players struggle on poor pitch vs Rivers United

The Jos-based club travelled to Port Harcourt on Sunday but fell 1-0 to Rivers United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

While the loss keeps Plateau United in the middle of the pack, the coach believes the state of the turf played a massive role in the final score.

Plateau United Struggle on Difficult Port Harcourt Turf

The match was heavily impacted by the weather, as heavy rain turned the pitch into a major obstacle for both teams.

Ogunbote noted that the poor surface forced his players into a more physical battle than the technical style they usually prefer. Despite the struggle, he felt his squad put in a solid effort.

“I think the pitch affected both sides, but they are more used to it,” Ogunbote said in a video posted on the club’s X account.

“The game was more physical than technical, and unfortunately, we lost due to a moment of carelessness. That was practically the only real chance in the game. The boys didn’t do badly, but it just wasn’t our day.”

The veteran coach explained that certain members of the Jos-based team found it difficult to adjust to the muddy conditions.

He suggested that the lack of a smooth surface favored a more aggressive approach, which worked against his technical players.

“I understand my players and know when they perform best. Some of them can be a bit soft in games like this, especially on a poor pitch. A lot of factors worked against us,” he added.

Calls for Better NPFL Pitch Standards to Help Plateau United

Following the narrow loss, Ogunbote urged the league organisers to take a closer look at the facilities being used across the country. He argued that to improve the quality of Nigerian football, the league must prioritise high-quality grass surfaces.

“The pitch was not good enough, especially after the rain. This is something that needs to be addressed because it doesn’t present the league in a good light,” he continued.

The first half proved particularly difficult for the visiting side, though they found a better rhythm after the break.

As the season nears its end, the Peace Boys are now looking ahead to their next clash against Kun Khalifat FC. With the relegation zone still a mathematical threat, every point is vital for their survival.

“We have four games left—two at home and two away—and each of them is crucial. Our focus is to return to winning ways at home and secure enough points to improve our position on the table. We will give our best to achieve that.”
