Police Probe Alleged Unlawful Detention in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of unlawful detention and related misconduct following an online publication.

In a press release issued on Monday June 8, 2026 by the Police Public Relations Officer, Agabe Blessing, the Command stated that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed an investigative panel to thoroughly examine the incident and establish the facts.

The Command is calling on individuals directly affected, as well as members of the public with credible information, to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Concerned persons are advised to visit the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer or contact the Complaint Response Unit through designated phone lines.

CP Adepoju emphasised that detention beyond the legally stipulated period without due process is unlawful and will not be tolerated. He warned that any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary action in line with the Nigeria Police Act and other relevant laws.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
