Éric Chelle’s assembled Super Eagles showed immense grit but ultimately suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against a clinical Portugal side in Wednesday evening’s international friendly.
Despite a spirited performance that saw Nigeria bounce back from an early deficit, a late moment of individual brilliance from the hosts settled the highly competitive encounter.
Portugal Edge Nigeria in Friendly as Iwobi Reaches Historic Milestone
The tactical setup saw Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye start between the sticks, shielded by a defensive trio of Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi.
In midfield, Chelle partnered the experienced Wilfred Ndidi with Tochukwu Nnadi and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, while Genk youngster Christian Akpan was handed a memorable international debut.
The match was also a historic landmark for playmaker Alex Iwobi. By stepping onto the pitch, Iwobi earned his 100th cap for Nigeria, officially joining the legendary Ahmed Musa (111) and Vincent Enyeama (101) in the exclusive club of most capped Nigerian players.
Moses Simon and Akor Adams completed the dangerous attacking lineup.
Portugal opened the game with high intensity, threatening early when Cristiano Ronaldo uncharacteristically fired wide from close range in the 9th minute after losing his marker.
The breakthrough arrived in the 23rd minute when Diogo Dalot picked out an unmarked Pedro Neto inside the box, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to put Portugal ahead.
Adams Striking Brilliance Fails to Save Super Eagles From Narrow Defeat
Nigeria refused to back down and found their equalizer in the 38th minute. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru carved open the Portuguese defense with a precise, deep pass to Akor Adams, who kept his composure to beat the goalkeeper with a clinical low drive straight down the middle, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.

The second half turned into a fierce tactical battle, with both managers ringing changes to break the deadlock. Nigeria’s backline held firm against mounting pressure until the 75th minute, when Francisco Conceição produced a breathtaking individual effort.
The Portuguese forward skipped past two Nigerian defenders on the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful low strike into the bottom left corner.
Chelle’s men pushed hard for another equalizer in the final whistle countdown, but Portugal managed to see out the victory, leaving the Super Eagles with plenty of positives to build on despite the frustrating final scoreline.
