Residents of the Federal University of Technology Owerri axis and the neighbouring Eziobodo community were thrown into panic following reports of an armed invasion by suspected bandits.
The incident which took place in the late hours of Wednesday, May, 13,2026 has caused serious uproar in the community.
Eyewitnesses alleged that dozens of motorcycles carrying heavily armed men stormed parts of the area, attacking residents and causing chaos within the community. Some locals claimed the attackers were suspected herdsmen, though security authorities are yet to officially confirm the identity of those involved.
Videos circulating online showed scenes of confusion and distress, with residents fleeing for safety as sporadic gunshots were reportedly heard in parts of the community.
While several social media posts alleged that many persons were killed or injured during the attack, the exact number of casualties has not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The incident reportedly caused fear among students and residents around the FUTO environment, with many calling for urgent intervention by security agencies.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies had not released an official statement regarding the attack or possible arrests connected to the incident.
