The Rivers State Government has dismissed the entire management, technical crew, and staff of Rivers Angels Football Club with immediate effect in a sweeping restructuring aimed at restoring the club’s status as a powerhouse in Nigerian women’s football.

The decision was conveyed in an official letter dated June 29, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Sports, Emmanuel Ndah. According to the letter, the drastic action was taken due to the club’s “non-performance and lack of seriousness.”

Rivers Angels Overhaul Follows Disappointing 2025/26 Campaign

The mass dismissal comes on the back of another frustrating season for the seven-time Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) champions.

Despite hosting the 2025/26 NWFL Super Six in Port Harcourt, Rivers Angels failed to capitalize on home advantage, recording just one victory and finishing joint-bottom alongside FC Robo Queens.

The disappointing campaign extended the club’s wait for another league title to four years, having last been crowned champions in 2021.

The continued decline appears to have convinced the Rivers State Government that a complete reset was necessary.

Although Rivers Angels remain one of Nigeria’s most successful women’s clubs, boasting seven league titles and 10 President Federation Cup triumphs, they have struggled to replicate their previous dominance in recent seasons.

The club also etched its name into history by becoming Nigeria’s first representative at the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt in 2021.

However, after exiting at the group stage, the Jewels of Rivers have found it difficult to return to the summit of domestic football.

Tosan Blankson Era Ends as Rivers Angels Begin Fresh Rebuild

The shake-up also signals the end of Tosan Blankson’s reign as head coach.

Blankson, who joined the club after successful spells with Delta Queens, will leave alongside his entire backroom staff after spending two seasons with Rivers Angels.

During his tenure, he guided the club to:

  • Two Rivers State FA Cup titles.

  • One President Federation Cup triumph.

  • Two consecutive NWFL Super Six qualifications.

Despite those achievements, they were not enough to secure his future as the government opted for a complete overhaul of the club’s structure.

Interestingly, the Rivers State Government has opened the door for the affected staff, stating that those dismissed are free to reapply if they wish to be considered for the new setup.
