The Rivers State Police Command has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of misconduct involving the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) of Oyigbo Division, following a publication circulating on various online platforms.

A rights activist (name withheld) had on Friday, June 19, 2026, accused the DPO of extorting ₦500,000 from an individual who was allegedly arrested and detained at the station without any known offence.

Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command, Olugbenga Adepoju.

The activist also alleged that the officer preferred what he described as a ridiculous charge against a woman, accusing her of stealing her own children in the course of a dispute with her estranged husband.

According to the activist, the woman was subsequently remanded in a correctional custodial centre based on the charges, a development he condemned.

Meanwhile in a statement issued on Sunday June 21, 2026 by the Police Public Relations Officer, Agabe Blessing, the Command confirmed that the officer in question has been removed from his position pending the outcome of a thorough and impartial investigation.

The statement noted that the action was taken in line with the Command’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, expressed deep concern over the incident, stressing that the Command will not tolerate any form of misconduct, abuse of office, or actions capable of undermining public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

He assured residents that the investigation would be conducted diligently, professionally, and without bias.

The Command also reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity, discipline, and effective service delivery, while encouraging members of the public to continue reporting cases of misconduct through appropriate channels.

Members of the public are advised to reach the Complaint Response Unit on 07057605209, 07057605256, 08120822987, or 07072323049, while the Control Room can be contacted on 08032003514.
